Satellite TV antennas for Russia

In the modern world, it is not surprising that there is satellite HD TV at home, and the selection of antennas is not so intricate: you need to go to the electronics hypermarket, where a ready-made set of equipment with a service package is on the counter.
But what to do if you become the happy owner of a beautiful yacht or a small boat who wants to watch your favorite TV shows away from problems and hassles?

In this article, we will raise the most important questions on the selection of a satellite television antenna, consider the most popular models, and give a general overview of the system configuration.

Satellite TV antenna is a modern, gyroscopically stabilized

The antenna itself is a mirror, which can vary in diameter from 33 to 100 cm, the mirror is closed inside a plastic fairing, where there is also a gyro platform with a transceiver mechanism. The gyro-stabilized platform is one of the most important components of the system, without which it would not be possible to watch television, it is the main difference between the ground antenna and the marine one, and the main “equipment”.

With such an antenna, pitching is not terrible, just as any change in the yacht’s course is not terrible. Regardless of where and in what condition the antenna is and with what speed the yacht moves, there is always an accurate and uninterrupted signal reception. Today, technologies have reached such a level of development that they can reliably provide communications for thousands of kilometers of ships that are far away in the sea or ocean. Moreover, bad weather conditions can not prevent this at all, the satellite, which sends them a signal to the ship, equally successfully guarantees them to watch a variety of high-quality broadcasts in any part of the planet.

The configuration of the system, as a rule, is as follows and consists of a radome antenna, a control unit, an antenna cable and a power cable.

1. Antenna unit

The antenna unit contains a parabolic antenna with LNB, GPS, and an electronic positioning system control unit inside the radome. To connect power, RF signals, signals from the control unit, protected connectors are used.

2. The control unit (MCU)

The control unit provides access to the system and its functions using three buttons and an LCD display. It also serves to connect the ship’s power to the system and has a COM interface for diagnosing and configuring the system.

3. Receiver, TV.

Additionally, you need to purchase a receiver with access to television channels.

Features: it is very important to pay attention that the latest models of satellite receivers are connected to the TV device via the HDMI interface, if such is not available on the TV, it is possible to connect with “bells”, but in this case the receiver and the TV should be near, since their length is limited.

For satellite TV antennas, there is also the possibility of wiring the signal to several outputs, for this, in addition, you will need to purchase a multiswitch.

How to choose a marine antenna satellite TV antenna?

Often, it happens that the buyer, thinking about acquiring an antenna, puts forward certain requirements for it. For example, work anywhere in the world, small size or low price, or even all the wishes at once. Of course, much can be done, but with certain parameters of use. For Russia, this is more difficult to implement than anywhere else, and to a greater extent due to the geographical features of our country.
The navigation region where the antenna will operate. This parameter, first of all, affects the size of the diameter of the mirror of the antenna and therefore the size of the antenna itself. The larger the mirror, the higher the signal gain and therefore the region of use of the equipment increases. Conversely, the smaller the diameter of the mirror, the worse the reception coefficient, the level of signal propagation from the satellite is weaker. Accordingly, the region of use of the equipment is narrowing. The recommended minimum satellite signal reception is indicated in decibels (dB) and is indicated in the antenna specifications. Based on it and a satellite coverage map or satellite TV operator for a specific region, it is enough to simply determine which antenna is suitable for use in a particular region.

For example, looking at a satellite coverage map, we can say that a satellite TV antenna with a signal level of 49-50 dB is suitable for use in the Northwest region. Which corresponds to a mirror diameter of 37-45 cm. In the Caspian Sea, an antenna with a signal level of 52-42 dB with a mirror diameter of 33-100 cm can come up. A small mirror will only receive a signal in the northern part of the Caspian, and a large one will allow you to use television almost everywhere. However, large equipment takes up space for installation and is not suitable for pleasure yachts, and also significantly different in cost.
